Plot

Parima is a school teacher from Kerala living in Delhi with her husband Vinay and their young son. They live a simple middle-class life. One night, while returning home from a school event, five men kidnap her near a metro station. They brutally assault her for hours, record parts of the crime, and leave her badly injured on a railway track. A passerby finds her and takes her to the hospital. She survives, but suffers deep physical and emotional trauma.

The case becomes national news. The title “Assi” refers to the statistic that around 80 rapes are reported every day in India.

The police begin investigating the case and arrest the five accused men. However, the system appears careless and corrupt. There are signs of bribery, weak investigation, and tampered evidence. Vinay struggles to support his wife while protecting their son from media attention and social shame. Parima’s school and some neighbours distance themselves from her, showing how victims are often blamed and isolated.

A passionate lawyer named Raavi decides to fight Parima’s case in court. The film then focuses on the courtroom battle. The defence lawyer tries to blame Parima by questioning her character, clothes, and actions that night. A strict female judge watches the case as it reveals the sexism present in society and the legal system.

As the trial continues, important evidence is damaged and some witnesses change their statements. It starts to seem like the accused may escape punishment. At the same time, public anger grows. The film shows protests and people carrying black umbrellas in the rain. This creates the mystery of the “Umbrella Man,” a vigilante figure or group believed to punish criminals when the justice system fails.

In the climax, Raavi rebuilds the case using strong testimony and evidence. The judge finally finds the five men guilty and gives them punishment. Parima receives legal justice, but the film shows that the damage done to her life cannot truly be undone.

The movie also suggests that the “Umbrella Man” group continues to secretly target other criminals outside the law. In the end, Parima begins to heal emotionally, but the film leaves viewers thinking about how fragile justice can be and how the system nearly failed her.
